Press Release Opening March 2019

‘Beyond Bruegel’ and Plein Publiek take over Brussels

2019 marks the 450th anniversary of the death of Pieter Bruegel the elder, one of the greatest and most beloved Flemish renaissance painters. To celebrate the artist and pay homage to his legacy, Visitflanders, Plein Publiek and Create.eu have joined forces and developed a unique and contemporary immersive Bruegel-experience. To that end, they are taking up residence at the foot of the Mont des arts - the historical heart of the capital - where the majestic Palais de la Dynastie will be transformed into an impressive multimedia exhibit. Whilst the project was initiated by Duvel Moortgat, the experiential exhibit forms part of the Flemish master’s program, which puts the spotlight on Rubens, Bruegel and Van Eck with a range of events and activities that seek to attract 3 million visitors from all over the world.

Apart from the center of the Bruegel-experience, the Palais de la Dynastie is also bound to become Brussel’s newest hotspot. Indeed, Plein Publiek – which has deservedly established a buzz-worthy reputation as Antwerp’s single most popular event-location – will be planting its signature greenhouse in the Palais de la Dynastie, where from march onwards visitors are welcome to indulge in a wide array of brunches, concerts, jazz- and dance-nights, vintage markets, fashion shows, workshops, closet sales and much more.

In line with Plein Publiek’s recipe for success, the greenhouse will be housing a bar and contemporary restaurant, the concept of which has been conceived by chef Gilles Melchior. The latter has made a name for himself as an outstanding culinary talent with his self-titled restaurant and previously gained experience in the three Michel-starred restaurant Hof van Cleve. The young chef features among Flanders Kitchen Rebels – a selection of promising chefs with a love for Flemish gastronomy – and is widely praised for his authentic culinary style, which passes over the hypes and instead prioritizes technicity, respect and dynamism.

The culinary offer of Plein Publiek BXL will be entirely Bruegel-inspired and surprise its guests by revisiting the Flemish culinary tradition, taking a fresh take on classic dishes while paying respect to their roots. When the sun is out, visitors can take a pick from the menu on the outdoor terrace and pair their choice with a uniquely served Duvel on tap or Brueghel-beer to quench their thirst before or after having enjoyed the “Beyond Bruegel” exhibit.

“Beyond Bruegel” is an innovative and interactive art attraction that merges cutting-edge technologywith Bruegel’s classical paintings in order to create a truly immersive experience. While the first part of the experiential exhibit will allow visitors to brush up on their knowledge of the life and work of the artist in a multimedia setting, an animated and interactive 360-degree projection will subsequently fully immerse them in the master’s marvellous universe.

Visitors are invited to not merely observe but actively take part in and walk through the works: whereasone minute you’ll find yourself coined between the army of Dull Gret, the next you’re embarking upon a ship setting sail for the Tower of Babel. Let yourself be taken by surprise as Bruegel’s characters are brought to life and make you part of the painter’s work, intricate style and inner world of imagination. Layer by layer, visitors get the chance to not only explore and decode but also actively savor the artist’slegendary heritage.

“Beyond Bruegel” accordingly offers a unique immersive experience that will enthuse both layman andtrained art lover, young and old, as well as local and tourist. Flemish Minister for Tourism Ben Weyts, who will be officially inaugurating the exhibit on the 6th of April, confirms: “Flemish Masters such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder truly are touristic highlights for Flanders. These artists are timeless icons of beauty, creativity and a longstanding legacy of craftmanship that lasts to this very day. More than ever, the Palais de la Dynastie will serve as the capital’s cultural epicenter where locals and tourists alike can luxuriate in the life and work of Bruegel. Via Visit Flanders, I have decided to invest 300.000 euro in this unparalleled art experience.”

Visit Flanders, Plein Publiek, Duvel Moortgat and CREATE.eu are having us impatiently awaiting spring. From that moment onwards, the Palais de la Dynastie will be transformed into a gastronomic and artistic meeting point where visitors worldwide and from all walks of life will be presented with the opportunity to discover both one and another and the legend that was Bruegel in a way they never have before.
